About the Sports Archives

The Western Reserve Historical Society’s Sports Archives is dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of northeast Ohio ’s sports history. For over a century Cleveland ’s contribution to the national sports scene has been of great significance. Beginning with the Cleveland Forest City ’s baseball club in 1869 to the World Champion Cleveland Browns of 1964, our city has enjoyed some of the finest moments in sports competition.

The Sports Archives maintains a collection of publications, programs, photographs, journals, audio and DVD recordings, and sports memorabilia dating back to the early 20th century. The collection includes the research library of the Society for American Baseball Research, the Janet Macoska Sports Photograph Collection, the Louis Van Oeyen Photograph Collection, the Frank Phelps Collection, the Mike and Sharon Hargrove Collection and the Fred Glover Hockey Collection.

The Sports Archives offers public programs throughout the year. Check back for a schedule of book signings, lectures and special appearances from Cleveland professional sports personalities.
