Merging Traditions

Merging Traditions: Jewish Life in Cleveland tells the story of Cleveland ’s Jewish community in photographs. The first edition of Merging Traditions was published jointly by the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland (JCF) and the Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS) in 1978. During the late 1990s, one of its authors, Judah Rubinstein, began work on a revised edition. He added newer photographs covering nearly 30 years of history as well as newly discovered older images that had been donated to the Cleveland Jewish Archives of the WRHS. Kent State University Press agreed to publish the latest edition, which was almost complete at the time of Judah Rubinstein’s death, in 2003. Jane A. Avner, then Associate Curator of Jewish History at the WRHS, finished the book, published in Rubinstein’s memory. Publication of Merging Traditions: Jewish Life in Cleveland, Revised Edition, also marked the JCF’s Centennial Celebration and the national commemoration of the 350th anniversary of Jewish settlement in .
