How do I make a donation?

The Crawford seeks the donation of vehicles of any condition that are relevant to its mission. These include automobiles and other forms of land transportation including bicycles, motorcycles, and related items that meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Vehicles manufactured in the Western Reserve or Northeast Ohio.
  • Vehicles which have a significant historical connection to the Western Reserve or Northeast Ohio such as vehicles designed in these areas, vehicles which participated in races or other events in these areas and vehicles driven, ridden, designed or manufactured by individuals of historical significance to these areas.
  • Vehicles which illustrate important contributions in engineering, performance, marketing or styling.
  • Popular “cult” vehicles, military vehicles and vehicles owned by celebrities that stir the emotions and memories of collection visitors.
  • Exciting vehicles that draw visitors to see the Collection such as classics, sports and racing vehicles and other high performance vehicles.
  • Components, artifacts, models, works of art and memorabilia relating to any of the above categories.
Vehicle donations are evaluated under the Collection Management Policy by the Crawford Collection Committee. Vehicles will either be recorded and accepted as part of the Collection, or used outside of the collection for other purposes (nursing home tours, education programs and field demonstrations). Some vehicles that are not formally accepted into the Collection may be traded or sold to fund restorations, maintenance and other Crawford acquisitions and projects.

Unlike other charitable organizations that solicit vehicle donations, tax deductions for vehicle donations to the Crawford will generally be based on the appraised value of the vehicle. Please refer to IRS Publication #4303 for more information.

Many donors have given vehicles to the Crawford simply as a form of financial support to the organization with the expectation that the vehicles will ultimately be improved by our volunteers and sold or traded to upgrade the collection or to provide funds to support restoration and maintenance.

In all cases, the Crawford will provide the donor with a statement of the expected use of their donation. This statement of use is an important document to support the tax deduction claimed by the donor if the donor claims a deduction based upon appraised value. There should be a mutual understanding of the use of the donation between the donor and the Crawford before the donation is made so there is no misunderstanding.
